Gun youngster Russo-Nance joins Tuatara

The Auckland Tuatara have secured the services of exciting teenage star Dontae Russo-Nance for the 2022 Sal’s National Basketball League season.

The 16-year-old guard grew up on Auckland’s North Shore and enjoyed a break-out rookie season in 2021, playing with the Huskies.

Russo-Nance finished runner-up as Rookie of the Year while still at school. He has played basketball since he was three, representing Waitakere Basketball and winning three New Zealand National championships in three different age groups.

He then started his high school journey at Rangitoto College before transferring to Saint Kentigern College in 2019. He will begin his final year at school in the New Year.

In 2019 Russo-Nance was selected to represent New Zealand, playing for Asia Pacific at the Junior NBA global championships in Orlando, Florida. “Dontae is an incredible talent and has a huge future in the sport,” Tuatara coach Aaron Young said.

“We saw last year what he is capable of and we expect him to take some more steps forward this season.

“We are delighted to secure his services and think he will play a key role for us this season.”

Russo-Nance, who has a strong connection to coach Young, said he was keen to link with the Tuatara as soon as they confirmed their place in the league.

“Aaron is a great coach and I’m really looking forward to working with him again next season,” Russo-Nance said.

“I like what the Tuatara are planning and am keen to be part of it.”

Russo-Nance joins Sky Sport Breakers centre Rob Loe on the confirmed 2022 roster with more players to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
