Northland’s Tukaha Cooper has signed to play for the Auckland Tuatara in the 2024 Sal’s NBL competition.
The 21-year-old has played for the Manawatu Jets over the past three seasons but links with the team closest to where he grew up in 2024.
A talented guard, Cooper was raised in Kaikohe in the Far North. He attended Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kaikohe and then Whangarei Boys High before finishing his schooling at Rotorua Boys High.
Coach Aaron Young and assistants Sonny Tuaputa and Josiah Maama have been impressed with what they’ve seen at some off-season trainings and were quick to offer him a contract.
“He has some real talent and I think he will be a key contributor for us in 2024,” Young said.
“We’ve seen him get an opportunity with the Jets, but I really think he is primed to take another big step next season.”
Cooper is excited to link with the Tuatara.
“I am so happy to be with the Tuatara,” Cooper said. “I love what Aaron and the team have assembled with this roster and it is going to be a great experience being a part of it.
“I can’t wait to get into it.”
Cooper joins a Tuatara roster that includes Rob Loe, Cam Gliddon, Tom Vodanovich, Chris McIntosh and Reuben Fitzgerald.
