The Auckland Tuatara have fallen at the final hurdle as they went down to the Canterbury Rams 93-82 in the Sal’s NBL Grand Final at Trusts Arena on Sunday night.
Little separated the two sides throughout, but the Rams hit some big shots down the stretch in the final quarter to take control and win their first title since 1992.
It was a bitter pill for the team to swallow after a stellar season in which they topped the regular season standings.
“To all Auckland Tuatara fans – thank you for coming with us on this emotional ride this season and sorry we couldn’t get you the win last night,” GM of Sport and Communications Dale Budge said.
“It is heart-breaking to have such an amazing season and come up so close, especially for the second year running.
“While we didn’t get to lift the trophy, it was amazing to feel, see and hear the support from our community and we can see this whole thing building all the time. Thank you for being part of that and for helping to inspire us – we can’t wait to take it to another level next season.
“We are so proud of coach Aaron Young, his management group and all of our players. Not only did they play terrific basketball all season, but they also represented our organisation and our region and conducted themselves in a manner we can be proud of.
“The group we assembled in 2023 was a very special one and we’ve formed a bond that goes well beyond winning and losing basketball games.”
Reuben Te Rangi finished with 27 points while MVP Rob Loe had 11 boards and seven assists.
