Comeback falls just short against Hawks

The Auckland Tuatara’s winning streak to start the Sal’s NBL came to a halt on Wednesday night as the Hawke’s Bay Hawks withstood a final minute comeback to win 75-74 at Eventfinda Stadium.

The Tuatara began the game strongly and led through the first two quarters of the game but a 19-2 rally early in the second half saw the visitors take control of the game.

The Tuatara offense failed to click as the Hawks defense continued to thwart any momentum the side got.

A final minute rally, including back-to-back three pointers from American import Chris Johnson, brought the Tuatara level but the Hawks managed to go in front and then hold on for victory.

Johnson did his part to get the home side the win – he led all scorers with 29 points and added 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocks in another stat-stuffing performance.

Newly arrived import Siler Schneider added 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals while Rob Loe had 10 rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

The Tuatara remain atop the Sal’s NBL standings with a four wins and one loss record.

They are next in action next Saturday night when the cross-town Franklin Bulls come to town. A big crowd is expected and tickets are available on www.tuatarabasketball.com.
