Coach Young signs with Perth Wildcats

Auckland Tuatara coach Aaron Young has been appointed as the assistant coach of the Perth Wildcats in the Australian Basketball League in a major career move.

It is a massive opportunity for the Auckland local and he is still able to keep his position with the Tuatara.

The highly regarded Young took the Tuatara to the grand final in their maiden season competing in the Sal’s NBL in 2022 and has the side top-of-the-table this season.

It follows leading the Auckland Huskies – predecessor to the Tuatara – to the playoffs in his maiden season in charge.

The Wildcats, who are arguably the most successful of the NBL franchises, approached Young and offered him a position that will have significant impact on the way the side plays.

“It has always been a goal of mine to join an ANBL club and contribute at that level,” Young said. “It’s a league I have great respect for, especially with the direction it’s heading on the global scale. Perth have always been world-class – I want to thank them for trusting me with this role”

“It’s an opportunity I know I’m ready to take, considering the sacrifices made to put me in this position. I am truly grateful for all of the support received from the people tight within my inner circles, especially my parents and my partner Julie. I couldn’t be more excited to take on this next chapter in my coaching journey.”

Auckland Tuatara GM of Sport and Communication Dale Budge said the franchise could not be prouder of Young.

“Aaron is such a quality coach and even better person. He has been the architect of our success since joining the Sal’s NBL and we knew the day was coming where he would get tapped on the shoulder.

“We are absolutely delighted for him, and we’re thrilled that he will be able to continue to coach the Tuatara at the same time.

“We know he is focused on winning the Sal’s NBL this season, but we are excited for what lies ahead for Aaron.”

Young will remain as head coach of the Tuatara heading into the 2024 season. He will make the move to Perth shortly after the current campaign with the Tuatara concludes and will be back to lead the team prior to the 2024 season commencing.
